About me

My name is Richard Mangan and I am a 20 year old third year computer applications student in Dublin City University.
I am am member of DCU Rockclimbing club and I am also a member of DCU Caving Club.

I live in Kilnamanagh which is in Tallaght which is in Dublin which is in Ireland which is in Europe etc. etc.

I worked on my third year project with Mark McSherry. It was be a cave cartography(mapping) program written in JAVA. The project is complete but we have not decided if we will put it on the Web yet. Basically it's got a couple of small bugs and if we have time to fix it we'll put it up. If you are interested in either the program or the code please mail me.

Kilarney

The climbing club trip to Kilarney was a great success with some notable climbing and drinking sessions all through the October Bank Holiday weekend.

Leads by members which were enjoyed alot include Bats E1 5C, Ljubljana E1 5C, Sweet Surrender E1 5C, Daffodils HVS 5A, Cuff's Crap HVS 5A, Titanic VS 4B, Raven VS 4B. An interesting top rope was Deadline, a tough overhanging 6A which although many tried(including myself) was only conquered by one person in the group(Eimhin , still sticking by the "it's a blokes name as well" quote). Eimhin was defeated by two(yes 2) E1's on the same day. His first taste of failure. He's a little bitter about me mentioning it here but he is actually a girl(it's completely true, I promise).

The 35's

I don't have the actual scores but the overall results were as follows :
DCU men won by about 40 points
DCU women lost by 40 points
DCU begginer men lost by 120 points
Congratulations to UL on their win.
Pictures from the event are available below.

Glendalough

On a wet weekend in November 9 club members braved the gale force winds(not really) and went to Glendalough for the weekend. As usual we all got pissed at every possible opportunity and we also did a wee bit of climbing on Saturday. Pyramid Route, Pine Tree Cracks(in the dark) and some other climbs on Hobnail Buttress were completed on what was really a cold day and uneventful day. We were rained in on Sunday so we spent the morning in the tents and the afternoon in the pub waiting for the bus.

DCU Bouldering League

The second round of the National Bouldering League was held in DCU on Saturday 6th December. DCU Climbing Club would like to thank all who helped out on what was quite a good day. There were 134 competitors competing on the day on some excellent routes helped by the fact that we finally got new holds.
Afterwards the prizes were given out in The Slipper with free beer for those who turned up.
The results are now available here.

Table Quiz

The table quiz took place on Wednesday the 10th of December in the function room in Frodo's. Although the turnout was quite bad everybody there had a good time(thanks to the alcoholic spirits handed out as prizes to the winning team "The Peckerheads". The "yellow spotted elephants from outer space" came second while "Round 1" came a dismal third.

Galway Bouldering League

Nobody nearly got arrested, really.

First night, we were followed by a cop who felt we were up to no good. All we were doing was sitting on a park bench in Eyre Square.

Second night, Natalie and Conor were removed from a tree by two cops. What they were up to nobody knows.

Later that evening, I was almost arrested for trying to play the guitar. I borrowed a guitar from a busker and when a cop appeared Conor pleaded for him to arrest me. Quite unfair because I didn't even get a chance to disturb the peace.

Thank god the cops didn't see me trying to juggle because that would have confirmed how drunk I was. I couldn't even catch a single club.

Oh, and by the way, we also climbed in the competition, just in case you were wondering.
